In this article, we will explore the history and content of the Serbian translation of Darwin's masterpiece, which is titled Postanak fela pomoću prirodnog odbiranja ili održavanje ponjegovanih rasa u borbi za život (The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life).

The first Serbian translation of Darwin's book

The first Serbian translation of Darwin's book was done by M. M. Radovanović, a professor of natural history at the Belgrade Higher School. He translated the book from the sixth, revised and augmented edition of the English original, which was published in 1872. Radovanović's translation was published in 1878 by the State Printing House in Belgrade, with a preface by the translator and an introduction by Jovan Žujović, a prominent Serbian geologist and paleontologist. The translation was titled Postanak fela pomoću prirodnog odbiranja ili održavanje ponjegovanih rasa u borbi za život, which is a literal translation of the English title. The word fela is an archaic term for species, derived from the Latin word phyla. The translation consisted of 239 pages and had 15 chapters, corresponding to the original structure of Darwin's book.

The content and impact of Darwin's book

Darwin's book presented a comprehensive and convincing argument for the theory of evolution by natural selection, based on his observations and experiments on various living organisms, as well as his knowledge of geology, paleontology, and comparative anatomy. He showed that all living beings share a common ancestry and that they have diversified and adapted to different environments through a gradual process of variation and inheritance. He also explained how natural selection acts as the main mechanism of evolution, preserving those variations that are beneficial for survival and reproduction in a given environment, while eliminating those that are detrimental. He also discussed the implications of his theory for various biological phenomena, such as classification, morphology, embryology, hybridism, geographical distribution, instinct, and sterility.

Darwin's book had a profound impact on the scientific and intellectual world, as it challenged the prevailing views on the origin and diversity of life, which were based on religious doctrines or static conceptions of nature. His book sparked a lively debate and controversy among scientists, philosophers, theologians, and the general public, as it raised new questions and problems about the nature of life, the role of chance and necessity, the meaning and purpose of existence, and the place of humans in the natural order. His book also influenced various fields and disciplines, such as biology, psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, literature, art, and politics.

The availability and accessibility of the Serbian translation

The Serbian translation of Darwin's book is a rare and valuable document that reflects the reception and diffusion of Darwin's ideas in Serbia and the Balkans in the late 19th century. It is also an example of the scientific and cultural exchange between Serbia and other European countries at that time. The translation is currently preserved in the Museum of Science and Technology in Belgrade, where it can be accessed by researchers and interested readers. The translation is also available online in PDF format, thanks to the Wikimedia Commons project, which aims to provide free access to educational media content. The PDF file contains a high-quality scan of the original printed edition, with clear text and illustrations.
